The interview process is one of the most crucial parts of the hiring process. Your first impression and interaction with the interviewer will play an extremely vital part in whether or not you move forward with the company. If you land an interview, remember that you are not the only one. There will be multiple people vying for that same position. The IT field has become increasingly competitive in the job market, so what can you do to prepare for an interview? Here are some tips from ATS that may come in handy:

Do not come unprepared. Bring at least two copies of your resume; having a back-up is always a good plan. You never want to be in a position where your interviewer asks for a resume and you have nothing to present to them. You should also bring a list of your references and all of their contact information; it will make the application process move by much faster if you come prepared with them, instead of fiddling on your phone looking for their contact information.

You should also come prepared with multiple questions for the interviewer about the company, the position you are applying for, and what that position entails. It’s very important to do your research on the company, because they will be looking for someone who will be invested in them. Don’t just be another face in the sea of applicants; stand out by showing them that you are serious about the position and about the company.

And as always, rehearse your answers to possible interview questions beforehand. Have a script in your mind so that when it comes time to show the interviewer who you are and what you can offer, your answers will be well thought out and polished. Nothing shows unprofessionalism more than someone who is tripping all over their answers. You are representing yourself, so you should be an expert on the topic.

Lastly, you should be confident in yourself and your abilities! Do not doubt yourself. Confidence shows in your posture, speech, eye contact, and body language. If you have secured an interview, then that means that they are already interested in you. So take the opportunity to really show them who you are as a professional and let your character shine through. If you doubt yourself, then they will be able to see that and they will also start to doubt your candidacy for the position. Be confident, be professional, and be positive. The candidate sitting next to you may have the exact same level of experience and qualifications as you do, so what could be a deciding factor for the company to choose you over them? It’s your attitude– Remember that a good attitude can take you a long way.
