When to Speak French

Speaking FrenchFrom time to time, recruiters get into a discussion with a candidate that may not go as planned. The recruiter is asking questions as best they can, but to some extent, they only know how to go so far with the tech lingo. What sometimes happens in this discussion is that the candidate is not too pleased with the direction of the conversation and gets frustrated that the recruiter doesn’t know what they are talking about. But wait! There is a way to get through this dilemma. As a recruiter, it makes perfect sense to know the product and how it fits into the solution. But, the product has many features to explore, opening up a whole new way to understand things.

For the sake of talking the same language, it’s important for the recruiter and candidate to collectively find the middle ground that will help create an avenue for building a solid working relationship. And, for the most part, it’s the recruiter’s responsibility to make sure that this process is a well oiled machine. Here are a few things that we really try to pay attention to in the “getting to know you phase” of the recruiting process:

  1. What makes a candidate tick and how are they motivated?
  2. Why are candidates happy in their positions and contracts?
  3. What do candidates do for fun?
  4. What is going to keep them interested once they are on a client site?
  5. What will provide them a unique experience while working with Advantech?

Of course, these are only a few of the topics that can be used to kick off a great conversation with any type of candidate. So, when it comes time to start a new relationship, talk the language that you feel most comfortable with. And if you know French, speak it; otherwise, skip it for now and let them teach you the lingo when the time is right.
